Finding Comfort, Simplicity, and Ownership Again: Brenda’s Story

At 69 years old, Brenda Brown wasn’t planning on becoming a homeowner again. After the loss of her husband, life looked different. Like many in a similar season, she made a practical decision—downsizing into an apartment that felt manageable. But over time, something didn’t feel quite right.

“I was paying around $1,500 a month in rent,” Brenda shared. “And with utilities, it just kept adding up. It started to feel like I was throwing money away.”

A Simpler Life—Without Sacrificing Comfort

Brenda knew she didn’t want the responsibility of a large home anymore. What she did want was something smaller, easier to care for, and still comfortable enough to welcome family and friends.

That’s when she discovered that Betenbough was building smaller homes.

When she toured the thoughtfully designed 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom and 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom floor plans, everything started to fall into place. “I realized this was exactly what I needed,” she said. “Something compact, easy to clean, but still with space to have company.”

Today, Brenda’s 1 bed/1 bath home fits her lifestyle perfectly. And the yard helps her dog feel right at home, too! Hear her talk about enjoying a smaller home here

From Renting to Owning—A Financial Turning Point

Living on Social Security and a modest retirement income, every dollar matters. Brenda began to rethink what made the most financial sense. “At one point, I didn’t think I wanted to own again,” she admitted. “But paying that rent every month—and those high utility bills—it just felt ridiculous.”

When she compared costs, the realization was clear: She could own a brand-new home for less than she was paying in rent.

Now, instead of paying into something temporary, she’s building equity each month. “It’s a win-win situation,” Brenda said. “I’m paying much less, and it’s going toward something that’s mine.” You can watch her discuss her decision to own again here

Peace of Mind in a Brand-New Home

Another major benefit? Everything is brand new. From modern features to energy-efficient design, Brenda no longer worries about unexpected repairs or outdated systems. Plus, her home is backed by a two-year comprehensive warranty—adding an extra layer of confidence and security.

“It’s just so nice knowing everything is new and taken care of,” she shared.

Quiet, Privacy, and a Place to Call Her Own

One of the biggest changes Brenda appreciates is something many don’t think about until they experience it: peace and quiet. “No neighbors above me, below me, or on the other side of the wall,” she said. “It’s private. It’s quiet. It’s just right.”

A Perfect Fit for This Season of Life

Brenda’s home isn’t just smaller—it’s smarter. It’s designed for the lifestyle she wants today: low maintenance, comfortable, and affordable. “It works out so much better for me these days,” she said.

And she’s not keeping it a secret. “I’ve been telling my friends they need to come take a look at these homes. It’s so much easier to keep up with a smaller home and yard.”

It’s Never Too Late to Own Again

Brenda never expected to own a home again at 69. But now, she couldn’t be happier that she made the decision. “Renting felt like I was just using someone else’s things,” she said. “Now this is mine.”

For anyone considering a move later in life—whether downsizing, simplifying, or just looking for a better financial fit—Brenda’s story is a reminder: Sometimes, the right home comes at exactly the right time.
